From May 3rd to 5th, 2017, the National Organizing Committee of the 4th World Forum of Local Economic Development participated at the Conference Dialogue on Blue Growth and Economy. The event, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Cabo Verde, brought together 30 delegations from African countries and Small Islands Developing States (SIDS), with about 150 participants representing African institutions, governmental and private organizations, as well as civil society.
The conference provided a space for sharing experiences and success stories from around the world on the Blue Economy. It consequently provided the opportunity to follow up on the meetings held since the beginning of the conferences on Blue Economy, having in-depth discussion on fishing and aquaculture, food security, environmental issues, sustainable development, climate change and societies’ adaptation, resilience, fight against poverty, growth and development.
The program included 15 sessions, and the National Organizing Committee of the 4th World Forum of LED, represented by the President of the National Organizing Committee, Francisca Santos, took part in the sessions “How Blue Growth and Blue Economy present different visions and perspectives but common elements” and coordinated the session on “Local Economic Development and Blue Economic Growth” together with local territorial institutions of Cabo Verde.
The conference served as a preparatory meeting for the United Nations Oceans Conference to be held in New York in June. It was also the occasion to have some rich dialogues on the local economy of SISD, which will be further addressed during the 4th World Forum of Local Economic Development. The LED of SIDS, their common challenges and potential will be in fact among the special focuses of the World Forum.
